Plot sequencing activity using pictures

Students can use the images to retell the plot. You can get creative with this worksheet, encouraging students to prioritise the images, link images together or select one to present to the class. The open ended possibilities are endless.

Plot sequencing activity using text

This differentiated version of the resource above uses text summaries rather than images to support students further. This could be used in conjunction with the resource above, or individually.

Themes Starter

Use this printable to discuss the themes represented by each image. Get creative with this one – rank the themes by importance, connect them together, find quotations, etc.

Writing Prompts

Having read the play and discussed the themes, use these writing prompts to encourage students to write creatively and imaginatively as a response.

Context Research

Set students off on their own investigation into life in rural Ireland in the 1960s compared to life in big city America. You could make cross curricular links to Geography, getting students to consider the push/pull factors or to religious students, to investigate the power of the church in Irish history. This task is hugely open-ended!

Analysing Gar

Compare Public Gar and Private Gar in a side by side analysis, encouraging students to use quotations from the text as well as their own ideas. Why not photocopy this worksheet onto A3 paper to create life sized characters and have an interactive lesson where students all work on the same big task sheet?

Women in 'Philadelphia, Here I Come!'

Use this worksheet as a prompt to encourage students to explore the role of women in Irish society in the 1960s.
